Next – Up

Next up I will post in progress shots of the current work on the drawing board. Here are the first few posts starting with the priliminary drawings.

This first image is the thumbnail or concept drawing I did in my sketch book. I do these in ballpoint pen. Here I figure out the general concept the composition and the basic value plan.

Next I do a full size cartoon of the drawing on tracing paper. This is where I work out all of the drawing (anatomy, proportion, pose, etc.).This is also where problems invisable in the small thumbnail will rear their ugly head. I take the necessary steps to rectify those problems now, before I transfer the cartoon to the “good paper”.

This is the first session of work on the finished piece. I started with the two large trees that dominate the composition. I did this because they are the part of the drawing with which I knew I would struggle. Now that the trees are to a satisfactory stage of completion I will work my way down through the bottom of the drawing then finally moving on and finishing off with the top.
